Murshidabad witnessed a tragic incident on Sunday morning when a 16-year-old boy, Noor Selim, lost his life while trying to save his younger cousin from drowning. The incident occurred in Damos Beel, located in the Domadi area of Khairamari Panchayat under Sagarpara police station. Noor, who did not know how to swim, jumped into the water as his cousin Mamun Sheikh struggled while bathing.
According to reports, Noor managed to rescue Mamun, but in the process, he was overwhelmed by the water. Mamun screamed for help as Noor struggled, prompting neighbors to rush to the scene. Despite their efforts, Noor had already drowned before they could reach him. Locals immediately brought Noor out of the water and rushed him to Sagarpara Primary Health Center, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The tragedy has left the family and the local community in shock. Noor’s mother, Sabiron Bibi, expressed her grief, saying, "Nur Selim did not know how to swim. The accident happened when he saw his cousin drowning and tried to save him." The incident has stirred widespread sorrow in the Domadi area, with neighbors mourning the loss of the courageous teenager.
Police recovered Noor’s body and took it to the station. However, the family expressed reluctance to undergo an autopsy, and the body was handed over after providing written consent to avoid complications. Authorities continue to offer support to the grieving family as the community comes to terms with the tragedy.
